Five More Causes of Neck Pain

Stress

Stress caused more than just emotional and mental strife; stress can also significantly affect your physical health. When you experience stress and even anxiety, oftentimes, your body and muscles tense up. What’s more, people typically hold their stress in their neck and shoulders, which is why it is common to experience neck pain and even tension headaches when you’re feeling stressed.

Trauma

Last time, we mentioned that whiplash is one of the most common neck injuries that often accompanies an auto accident, work, or sports injury. Other types of trauma may cause nerve compression in the neck or severe muscle spasms and inflammation.

Sleeping In An Awkward Position

Have you ever woken up with a terrible pain or slight kink in your neck? When we sleep, it is very easy to find a position that, while it may feel comfortable at the time, causes pain, stiffness, and limited movement in your neck the next day. This is common among people who sleep on their stomachs with their neck turned to the side in an awkward manner, or when a person sleeps with their arms over their head.

Everyday Activities

We put our bodies through a lot on any given day. Sometimes, neck pain caused by something as simple as turning your head too sharp, from working at a computer with your shoulders scrunched up to your ears, or even from holding the steering wheel while driving. There is any number of daily activities that can contribute to existing neck pain, or cause discomfort in the neck to occur.

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis typically affects the neck and lower back. This painful condition is characterized by a narrowing of the spinal column, which can place pressure on the spinal nerves. Along with pain, spinal stenosis can cause weakness, as well as numbness and tingling that radiates down the arms and into the fingers. While this condition is one of those wear-and-tear, often age-related conditions, it can also be caused by spinal injuries, tumors, herniated discs, and bone growths on the spine.
