What Is Structural Integration Bodywork?
Structural integration therapy focuses on the soft structural tissues that improve function and movement of the entire structure of the body. In the 1940s, Dr. Ida P. Rolf developed structural integration as a holistic healing technique to rebalance and realign the body in accordance with earth’s gravitational pull, thereby alleviating misalignments in the body that contribute to pain and limited movement. Structural integration involves manually manipulating the fascia in the body to release tension in the connective tissues and muscles, thereby removing stiffness and tightness, increasing elasticity and flexibility, correcting alignment, encouraging better movement and function, and improving body mechanics.
Our Approach to Massage Therapy
Our massage therapy treatments integrate traditional massage therapy techniques while also focusing on manipulating the fascia in the body. Fascia is the most abundant tissue in the body, which is often to referred to as the “fascia web” due to its similarity in structure to that of a spider web. Fascia is a continuous, interconnected structure covering and attaching to each and every soft and hard tissue in the body, including muscles, nerves, arteries, veins, bones, and all the major organs. Not only do myofascial tissues encase and connect to hard and soft tissues, but it also supports them. Healthy fascia is relaxed, flexible, and malleable, whereas restricted fascia is stiff, tight, fixed, and tender. When someone experiences physical or emotional trauma, inflammation, and/or scarring from a surgical procedure or injury, these issues can restrict the myofascial tissues, thereby restricting movement, flexibility, function, and balance. As a result, tension in the fascia may cause or contribute to localized or widespread pain, misalignment, and muscle and joint restriction, which, ultimately, alters an individual’s body mechanics.
By manually manipulating the fascia, your massage therapist uses their fingers, hands, forearms, and elbows to press, stretch, and move the fascia with the goal of releasing and elongating the fascia.
