What is a “Chiropractic Internist”

According to the ACA Counsel of Diagnosis and Internal Disorders, a “chiropractic internist” is a chiropractic doctor who has completed the post-doctoral degree in diagnosis and internal disorders (DABCI). Chiropractic internists are trained in modern medical diagnosis, functional medicine, and natural therapeutics. chiropractic doctors with a post graduate DABCI certification utilize conventional medical diagnostics, specialized functional testing, and holistic medicine diagnostic evaluations. DABCI doctors routinely employ methods such as blood laboratory studies, urinalysis, electrocardiograms(EKG), ultrasound, spirometry, Dexa bone density testing, salivary assay hormonal test, food allergy testing, diagnostic imaging to include x-ray, CT, MRI, comprehensive gastrointestinal stool analyses and many other diagnostic tools. A DABCI uses therapeutic methods which emphasize conservative and minimally invasive approaches and minimize risk to the patient. Diplomats in diagnosis and internal disorders use treatments such as clinical nutrition, dietetics, exercise, vitamin and mineral supplementation, homeopathic medicine, botanical(herbal) medicine, acupuncture, natural hormone replacement and other natural medicine approaches including lifestyle counseling.

Dr. Lindsay Herzog, DC, MS, CAcu

We are thrilled to have her join Dr. Arne in providing top quality chiropractic and functional medicine care for our patients.

Dr. Lindsay Herzog first discovered her passion for the functionality of the human body while studying Movement Science at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She developed a great interest in athletes and the biomechanics of complex movement. She then continued on to get her Doctorate of Chiropractic degree from National University of Health Sciences just outside of Chicago. She also did extra training in acupuncture and dry needling through National’s acupuncture program. During the course of the doctorate program, she discovered the true significance of lifestyle medicine, including the dramatic effects of diet and nutrition, and went on the get her Master’s in Nutrition and Functional Medicine from the University of Western States in Portland, Oregon. Previous to her time here at Arne Chiropractic and Wellness Center, she practiced for 5 years at Davis Square Chiropractic in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Dr. Herzog employs a multitude of techniques to provide relief from both acute and chronic pain, including diversified chiropractic adjustments, myofascial release, McKenzie method for disc herniations, electrical stimulation, spinal traction, Cox Flexion Distraction, Webster technique for pregnant women, and dry needling. She also emphasizes the importance of physical activity and corrective exercises to improve health. Dr. Herzog has a passion for helping people improve their health in every way, particularly for patients with chronic diseases who have struggled to find any resolutions to their problems. She utilizes a variety of diagnostic techniques including blood work, urine analysis, stool testing, imaging, genetic testing, and the BodyScan to approach patient care in the most comprehensive way possible and get to the root of the problem. This allows her to approach the problem with very specific treatment recommendations that serve to detoxify and ultimately optimize patient health.

Rebecca Hammel, FNP-C

Rebecca is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and our Medical Director. Her background is in primary care, medical weight loss, and nutrition and she now specializes in functional medicine and all-things gut health. Rebecca completed her Master’s degree from Vanderbilt University and then worked in primary care as a full time NP and Clinical Director in Nashville, TN for several years before moving to Denver.

She found her passion for functional medicine through her own personal health journey and the frustrations she experienced with the traditional medical model. Despite her lengthy training in Western medicine, she quickly realized the “pill for every ill” model just doesn’t work very well and although they were managing symptoms, people weren’t truly getting better. She started learning more about functional medicine and integrative wellness and began implementing the principles of root cause medicine into her private practice in Nashville, TN and sure enough, her patients improved drastically and actually started getting off their prescription medications. Personally, she struggled with chronic pain, anxiety, bloating, and eczema for many years and it wasn’t until she shifted her focus on internal healing that her symptoms finally resolved. Her goal is to get to the root cause of patients’ symptoms to help them truly heal from the inside out by combining the best of natural remedies and traditional Western treatments (including prescriptions if necessary) for the best possible care.
