As Littleton’s top choice for chiropractic care, Arne Wellness Center works hard to help our patients protect their back and spine health. Often our chiropractor provides care to people whose spine issues could have been avoided with more careful attention to their posture. Here are some tips on maintaining your spine’s health through proper posture.

Standing

A good pair of shoes can go a long way to helping you maintain comfort and posture while standing for prolonged periods of time. Try to stand tall without slouching, keeping your hips forward and shoulders back. Many people have bad posture because they don’t engage their muscles while standing; keeping your abdominals tight can help your spine to stay in a neutral position free from excessive strain.

Sitting

Choose a straight-backed chair that helps you sit upright. Again, slouching can have a long-term impact on your spine. Leaning forward to look at a computer screen puts unnecessary strain on your neck and lower back. Shifting position frequently helps to reduce the chance of damage to the different areas of your neck and back.

Sleeping

You spend a third of your life in bed, and if you don’t have a high-quality, supportive mattress, all that time spent there could be doing extensive damage to your back. You might find an ultra-firm mattress to be uncomfortable, but too soft of one can cause your spine to sag in awkward places, potentially leading to injury. Try for a medium-firm to get the support you need.
